Spring Two- Week Two

Date: 3rd Mar 2023 @ 11:13am

Hi everyone,

We have been enjoying reading The Little Red Hen this week. The children have had a great time acting out the story in front of their peers. We also used our fantastic phonic skills to write character descriptions—lots of fantastic vocabulary was used to describe the animals’ personalities, selfish, lazy, and unhelpful.

This week in phonics, we reviewed the sounds 'y, z, qu, ch'. The children have had fun participating in various activities to help them consolidate their phonic knowledge. Please try to review all Level 2 and 3 sounds with your children at home (as distributed at parent evenings). This revision will boost their confidence while also improving their phonic skills. Parents/ Carers, the children have been given purple handwriting books to practise letter formation at home. Every week, we will ask your child to practise forming various letters. Please return handwriting books no later than Wednesday so that we can set them up and resend them on Friday.

On Thursday, we celebrated World Book Day by participating in a variety of activities such as making 3D storybook character crayons, caption writing, a book scavenger hunt, and bookmark design. We started preparing for this special day by making some Gruffalo crumble the day before. The children used their excellent listening skills to follow the recipe. We waited patiently for the crumble to set before devouring it the next day! Mrs Hymers came to visit and enjoyed the Gruffalo crumble. She thinks we are fantastic bakers.

In maths, the children have been learning to combine or add two groups of numbers to find the total. Furthermore, we have continued to revise numbers six, seven, and eight, exploring the composition of these numbers to ensure we have a thorough understanding of the number system. The children have been given a fun home learning activity, which helps to reinforce the work they have been doing in school. It would be lovely if you could upload a photograph of your child's work to Evidence Me so we can celebrate their learning.

This week, caterpillars have made their way into our classroom!  We thought long and hard about how to care for them and decided to write some caterpillar rules that we have promised to follow.  We also read them the story 'The Crunching Munching Caterpillar,' which we believe they enjoyed because they looked very cosy. The children are so excited to watch them grow. Keep an eye out for updates!

During this week's Wellie Walk, we really appreciated our beautiful natural surroundings.  The children used pencils to sketch what they could see using their observation skills.

We hope that you have a lovely weekend,
