Spring Term 1- Week Two

Date: 13th Jan 2023 @ 10:40am

Hi everyone,

We have had a super first full back back at school! This week we have made a start to our new topic,  ‘All Around Me’. So far, we have learned about where we live, where our school is, and the different types of homes. As we approach Spring, we will investigate minibeasts, their habitats, and growth.

'The Three Little Pigs' was this week's focus story. This traditional story has inspired much of our work. The children had a lot of fun making wanted posters in order to find the Big Bad Wolf!  There was a lot of fantastic, descriptive language used. We also enjoyed navigating the Beebots around a map of the Three Little Pigs' homes. The children paid close attention and followed the instructions.

This week in Reception, many problem-solving skills were put to use. Using various materials and objects, the children were challenged to build a home for the Three Little Pigs that the wolf would not blow down. They worked together by listening to each other's ideas.

In phonics, we reviewed the digraphs 'qu,', 'ch,’sh,', 'th,' and 'ng' this week to ensure that the sounds were consolidated. The children are also gaining confidence in using their spelling fingers to spell multi-syllable words! The children have been given a fun activity, which helps to reinforce the work they have been doing in school. There is no need to return the sheet to school, so please just do what you can and when you can.

In maths, we looked at the number zero and discussed how the numeral ‘0’ can represent the concept of no value. We also had fun playing a game in which we attempted to throw as many bean bags into a bucket as we could. When we checked how many bean bags were inside the bucket, we did a lot of super counting. The children thought of different ways to record their score!  We also have been working very hard to form our numbers to nine, correctly. The children have been given a number activity, which helps to reinforce the work they have been doing in school.  There is no need to return the sheet to school, so please just do what you can and when you can. It would be lovely if you could upload a photograph of your child's work to Evidence Me so we can celebrate their learning

Next week, Reception will learn all about Chinese New Year. As part of our learning, we will sample some Chinese cuisine, including egg noodles, vegetable spring rolls, prawn crackers, and sweet chilli sauce. If your child is allergic to any of the foods listed above, please notify a member of the Reception team. Thank you.

We hope that you have a great weekend,
