Amazing adverts, clever coordinates and the brilliant Bard

Date: 17th Mar 2021 @ 11:39am

This week, we are working harder than ever in Year 6!

In the mornings, we have been completing maths, literacy and guided reading lessons as normal. The afternoons have been structured slightly differently (just for the time being) as we have been working on a project (designing an earthquake-proof building). Each afternoon, we have been split into two groups: one group has been continuing with the research project, and the other group has been completing extra maths activities with Mrs Naylor. The groups have then swapped after a period of time so everyone has a chance to do both. Normal afternoon lessons will resume once our project has been completed.

Here is a breakdown of our learning from this week smiley

Maths

In maths, we have been covering position and direction, including reading co-ordinates, plotting co-ordinates and drawing shapes on a co-ordinate grid. We are also going to progress to look at translating shapes and reflecting them along the x and y axis, as well as in all four quadrants. This is a topic we've covered briefly in the past, but lots of us weren't feeling very confident and so a recap has really helped. Our afternoon sessions have been spent reinforcing our understanding of co-ordinates and their position and direction, with some mastery activities being completed. yes

Literacy

In our writing lessons, we have started to learn about persuasive writing. We have unpicked a piece of persuasive writing and have identified its features. We also had a go at writing our own persuasive adverts about products we either know about or something we have invented. Our adverts were extremely persuasive and we have really shown a secure understanding of what makes people want to buy a product.

Guided Reading

During Guided Reading lessons, we have started our new class novel, 'Kaspar the Titanic Cat' by Michael Morpurgo. We are really enjoying the story so far, although it has already shocked us with an unexpected twist!

Shakespeare Week

This week is also Shakespeare Week. As well as completing maths, literacy and project lessons, we have managed to squeeze in some learning about The Bard himself. We have completed reading activities, research tasks and artwork, as well as watching short video clips of some of his most famous plays. We are really enjoying learning about William Shakespeare so far.

That's it from us this week. Check back next week to find out what else we've been up to!
