Thursday 18th June Blog

Did you know it was ‘International Picnic Day’ today?

Maybe you could have a picnic outside if it is nice, or even set up an indoor picnic if it rains?

So let’s start the day with a tongue twister. See how fast you can say this-

And hey, if you can’t say it very fast- it should at least make you smile 😊

Aaaanyway...

I had a wonderful email from James yesterday (I hope he doesn’t mind me sharing it with you), that is so fascinating- I have attached most of the email at the bottom of the page- have a read, it is really interesting!

Here is a little bit from the end of the email, with some pictures to go with it:

My nana has sent some pictures the school photograph is from St Mary’s school about 1899 and shows Emily Gee ( 2nd row 4th from right) and John Littler (3rd row 3rd from right).
The photograph on the doorstop is at 204 Main Street, John with Vera and Austin.
“Jacks” face is black due to him just coming home from the pit.
The photograph of my great grandad Austin Littler taken about 1930 standing in Main Street with their house in the background.

Thank you so much, James- I really enjoyed reading this! Your great great Grandad even inspired me to set the next task for your projects:

COAL MINING

I thought it would be good for you to research into coal mining in St Helens.

My Grandad was also a coal miner when he was younger (in Wigan) so this is a subject I am particularly interested in, and could tell you lots of stories about, but I want you to do your own ‘digging’ and find out as much as you can. Maybe create a PowerPoint Presentation, poster, information leaflet or whatever you like. Find out:

  • What coal mining was
  • What coal is/was used for
  • Who worked in coal mines?
  • What the working conditions were like
  • The names of some collieries in St Helens or the local area
  • Any stories about pit disasters

Coal mining fact sheets can be found here:

https://www.ncm.org.uk/learning/learning-resources/mining-factsheets

or a children’s website: https://kids.kiddle.co/Coal_mining

Here is a website with an interactive map of the collieries (coal mining sites) in St Helens and the surrounding areas:

https://www.nmrs.org.uk/mines-map/coal-mining-in-the-british-isles/lancashire-coalfield/st-helens-coalfield/

I HAVE ALSO SET YOU A TASK ON PURPLE MASH- PUT YOURSELF ‘IN THE SHOES’ OF A COAL MINER AND EXPLAIN WHAT IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN LIKE TO WORK DOWN A MINE.

Let’s see what you can find out!

BBC BITESIZE TODAY:

Maths: Adding decimals with a different number of decimal places

English: Writing narrative poetry.

DT: Structures

On a final note- I wanted to just tell you that if any of you are worried about sending work to school, or to me, because you don’t want it to go on the blogs or be shown to everyone, remember- if you tell me in an email you don’t want it shown to the class, I won’t put it up. I would hate to think that some of you are not sending any of your wonderful work because of this.

Have a wonderful day!

Write to you all tomorrow!

Miss Davies 😊
