Nick Rowland - Volcano Art

Our topic, 'Disasters', encompasses lots of different topics, including earthquakes, volanoes, tsunamis and other disasters such as the sinking of the Titanic.

This week, in art, we have looked at a painting by Nick Rowland, which is of a volcano erupting. We were given a copy of the painting and asked to consider the artist's techniques and materials used. Once we had discussed the painting, we were given the chance to imitate it, using the materials we thought should be used.

Our final pieces are looking great and will be proudly displayed in our sketchbooks.

Some of the learning that took place during this lesson:

  • Identify materials and techniques used in an artist's work.
  • Use a range of painting techniques, such as splattering, flicking, dripping, blowing etc to capture the explosive nature of a volcano inspired by Nick Rowland artwork.
  • Paint with increasing accuracy, choosing the appropriate brushes.
  • Describe the process, materials & techniques used in my own artwork.
