We have had a fun-filled and busy hallf term in Year 4!

To end half term we have been celebrating Black History Month. In Year 4 we have been learning about significant people in science. We read Hidden Figures and learnt about the inspirational women who helped america in the space race. We found out about Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson and Christine Darden. We learnt about their roles in NASA and how they all persevered and stood up for their beliefs - they were all amazing mathematicians who knew they were the best people for the job.

We then learnt about Mae Jemison who was the first female african-american astronaut. She was also a doctor and has set up her own foundation to help inspire children.

Finally, we learnt about Maggie Aderin-Pocock. She is a british space scientist who overcame her dyslexia to become a leading figure in space communication.

The children researched these women and created fact files to share the information they have found out.

In art, we found out about an artist called Alma Woodsey Thomas who was one of the first black women to gain an art degree. She used colour in her artwork to represent the positivity in the world. We looked at a famous quote of hers and discussed what we thought it meant:

“The use of colour in my paintings is of paramount importance to me. Through colour, I have sought to concentrate on beauty and happiness, rather than on man’s inhumanity to man.”

Have a look at some pictures of the children's artwork below.

Reminder:

Children will need to return their flutes to school on Tuesday 2nd November for our first flute lesson next half term.

Have a lovely half term and I will see you all on the 2nd November!
