'Wonder'ful work in Year 6

Date: 6th Dec 2017 @ 2:40pm

Come and See

We have recently finished our topic called 'Vocation and Commitment'. We learnt a lot from Father Bernard, who came into school and answered all of our burning questions about what it is like to be a priest.

Literacy

In our literacy lessons, we have been reading the book 'Wonder' by RJ Palacio. So far, we have loved reading this book and it has really opened our eyes and made us think about how we treat people. Since we started reading the book, we have completed some brilliant activities. We firstly looked at the front cover and made a prediction, before reading the book. Some of our predictions were way off! We also looked at characters' personalities by analysing their actions, thoughts and words. Then, we moved on to write our very own precepts. A precept is basically any rule or wise words which you can use to guide your life; some of our precepts blew Miss Barnes away! Here are a few of them:

  • Be the heart when everyone else is the fist;
  • Don't stand by, stand together;
  • Be a buddy, not a bully;
  • Be the shield, not the sword;
  • Throw kindness around like confetti.

After creating our own precepts, we then moved on to writing a diary entry. We are halfway through completing our diary entries, but so far they are very impressive. We are trying hard to apply all of the skills we have learnt this year and in previous years.

We are also thrilled about our upcoming cinema trip. We are going to watch the movie adaptation of 'Wonder'. After watching the trailer and reading the story, we really cannot wait to see it all come to life!

Once we have been to see the film, we will be donning our public speaking hats and writing speeches about how to treat people fairly, how to always 'choose kind' and how to accept people for who they are, not what they look like. These speeches will then be assessed and will go into our writing portfolios (sorry kids- another assessed piece!)

Design Technology

In our DT lessons, we have been doing lots of exciting things! We have tasted different types of bread and ranked them in order of preference. Then, we made Jamie Oliver proud by making our very own bread. Some of the shapes we created with our bread were fantastic! Some of us made bread in the shape of: a turtle; a smiley face; a snake; a plait; a love heart; a hedgehog and a snail.

Angels On High

Our play rehearsals are going well; the play is really starting to take shape now! The children know all of their lines and when to come in (most of them anyway!) We are putting the finishing touches on it and can't wait for you all to see it next week.
