Wednesday 15th July

Date: 14th Jul 2020 @ 7:00pm

Good Morning Year 4!

Did anyone complete the throwing and catching challenge yesterday? How did you get on? Did you drop the ball or were you a super catcher? I hope you are ready for another day of learning! It is Wednesday already so only three more days until the weekend.

There are two more chapters of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone for you to listen to. Chapter fifteen introduces you to the forbidden forest. Listen carefully to any description in this chapter as it might help you with today’s English lesson. Chapter sixteen is also available to listen to.

Today’s English lesson is looking at creative writing. It recaps expanded noun phrases, onomatopoeia and alliteration. Can you remember what these are?

  • Expanded noun phrase – An expanded noun phrase adds more detail to the noun by adding one or more adjectives. An adjective is a word that describes a noun. For example: The dark, mysterious forest.
  • Onomatopoeia – Onomatopoeia is when a word sounds like the noise it is describing. For example: bang, crash and buzz.
  • Alliteration – Alliteration is when words close together start with the same sound. For example: Sammy the slippery snake.

Here is an image that will hopefully spark your imaginations. Can you write a superb description of this image using expanded noun phrases, onomatopoeia and alliteration? You could also try to include similes and metaphors!

If you complete a description please send it into school, I would love to see what you can create! Remember that a description should create a picture in the reader’s mind.

Maths today is all about co-ordinates on a grid. Coordinates use two numbers and can be written like this (2,1).

  • The first number relates to the x-axis (the horizontal line across the bottom).
  • The second number relates to the y-axis (the vertical line on the left hand side).

I have attached 2 PowerPoints that explain how to read and plot co-ordinates on a grid along with an information mat and some activities for you to practise this skill.

The final lesson today looks very interesting. It is all about science in sport. It is looking at how forces are used in sports.

I hope you are all still reading each day and practising your times tables. Have a good day and I will talk to you all again tomorrow.

Miss Gradwell
