A Super First Week for Team Y2!

Date: 9th Sep 2021 @ 7:10am

Well, we’ve had a great first week back in Y2! It was lovely to see everyone looking smart and with great big smiles on their faces when we all returned to school on Monday.

As is usual in Y2 it has been a very busy week. For “Happy Healthy Me” week we have been thinking about all the different ways we keep our school and ourselves happy and safe.  We have remembered St Mary’s core values: passion, creativity, integrity, nurture and respect and have thought about all the different ways we can show these values in and around school.  Once we had thought a bit about this, we discussed some Golden Rules we could have in Y2, which would help make our classroom and playground a happy and safe place to learn.  The children came up with some super suggestions and were very insightful when it came to knowing their own personal goals and challenges. I was very impressed with the maturity they showed when talking about rules – this then led us onto looking at our wider society and British Values.  We thought about laws and the people who help make the laws and then what happens when the rule of law is broken.  We looked at the Union Jack and discovered how it is made up of the different flags of the countries of the UK.

For our Letters and Sounds, we continued on our journey that we had started in Reception and Year 1 having our daily phonics lessons when we practise our reading, speaking and listening, spelling and writing skills.  On Monday we started our “Pirate Spelling Books” which is how we link our work in school with our practice at home.  We take these books home on a Monday and using LOOK COVER SAY WRITE and CHECK, we practise writing and spelling these words three times at home.  When the books are returned ready for the next Monday lesson I have a good look at how you managed them at home!

In our writing lessons we have been learning how to read and spell the days of the week and then writing sentences about what we do on different days.  Next week we are going to start our topic “Passport to the World” when we will begin to read our class book “Gregory Cool” by Caroline Binch.  For our topic plans, key vocabulary and end points for this topic why not take a look at the website?

During story time we have been enjoying the classic “George’s Marvellous Medicine” by Roald Dahl.

In maths lessons we have started the year with a recap on learning from last year, looking at place value of numbers up to 20+ and how to read and write numbers up to 100. We start every day with a maths challenge from 8.45am.

Maths homework will start next week and will consist of a maths worksheet to complete which consolidates work completed in class and therefore should not be too challenging!

Look out on the newsletter for all our house point winners, bucket fillers and good work awards.  We will celebrate these in class every Thursday and then will have the opportunity to stand up in assembly every Monday afternoon in front of the whole school. What a lovely way to start each week!

Enjoy the weekend, see you all on Monday!
